　　Consuelo de Saint-Exupery wrote The Tale of the Rose in 1945,

with the pain of loss still fresh in her heart. The manu* was

sealed away in a locked trunk on her estate, and found by chance,

fifteen years after her death, when an academic was digging around

for fresh material for a new biography of Saint-Exupery. He died in

1979 and left her estate, and the proceeds from her share of The

Little Prince to her gardener.
